A Indigenous Perspective

As a Canadian citizen I feel an unwavering responsibility to share the knowledge of the Indigenous peoples of Canada. There is record of Indigenous communities dating back 12,000 to 16,000 years ago thousands of years before any Western settlers and colonizers arrived. Indigenous communities were flourishing on the land they called Turtle Island, living harmoniously with nature and people. These communities used oral story telling to keep their history and culture alive, but when the first westerns arrived with John Cabot, their culture was shamed and abused out of them. This is a history that is often overlooked as it is not what we want to be recognized by as “good or kind” Canadians, a stereotype that is often associated with our country. My inquiry project is based around recipe card boxes, but recording language and recipes physically was not something the Indigenous communities participated in, as oral story telling was a focal element of their beliefs. I thought it would be interesting to research some of the common/popular recipes that Canadian Indigenous communities use.
